Teaching English as a Foreign Language Program

The program is committed to sustainable development in academic excellence and scholarship, free inquiry, leadership, integrity, and service to society. The two-year Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (MA TEFL) Program is a professional degree that aims to prepare teachers of English as a foreign language for schools and colleges.   Graduates typically work in schools and universities as instructors, curriculum designers and language proficiency evaluators. The program also offers a graduate certificate: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (C-TEFL).  The curricula of these programs closely follow the requirements and standards of similar courses and degree offerings at institutions in the United States and international best practices.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate with a Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (MA TEFL), students must:

  • successfully complete 43 credit units (those admitted into the program as of Fall 2017) or 46 credit units (those admitted prior to Fall 2017), including (refer to the list of courses): 
    • 33 units of required courses (11 courses total). This list includes any one of the three capstone options worth of 3 units: 
      • Thesis (TEFL 392 – Capstone Project)
      • Design Project (TEFL 392 – Capstone Project)
      • Comprehensive Examinations (TEFL 393)
    • at least 9 units of TEFL elective courses
    • at least 1 unit of an environmental science course (e.g., ENVS 305 /TEFL 330 – Endangered Languages and Biodiversity)
  • have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
